Krag Hagana
This Method was developed by Master Welcher, when he was Senior Personal Defense Instructor of the School of Israeli Marine Cadets (The Israel Nautical College) in the city of Acre, in Israel.
Krav Hagana is a defense system targeted at the armed forces, requiring a fast, effective, and easy-to-learn defense. It is also a defense system for regular citizens to deal with violent threats in everyday life.
Krav Hagana can be translated as “combat of defense”. It utilizes simple, memorable techniques to transform students’ perception when facing an adversary. The system distills the essence of defensive moves from many martial arts programs, in a form that can be easily absorbed and used by anyone.
Israeli Krav Hagana blends teachings from great Israeli martial arts professors and ancient Far Eastern martial arts knowledge. Master Welcher combined these to create a martial art with very quick and effective results. His technique is easy to learn and applies without regard of gender or physical condition.
The teaching program was developed to reach the maximum level of learning and perfection during a short time period.
At the very first stages, the basic techniques are developed deductively, allowing students to quickly internalize and perform them effectively after each practice.
For years, the cadets of the Israeli Marine Cadets high school (The Israel Nautical College) in Acre have utilized Krav Hagana. Their application of these techniques in national competitions led the school to win a national championship and numerous regional awards.
The School of Israeli Police Cadets, located in "Kiryat Hachinuch" in the city of Maalot, is another institution achieving excellent results with these techniques.

The 4 most important differences between Krav-Maga and Krav-Hagana
1 - KRAV-MAGA: A Military Combat System
- KRAV-MAGA was conceived as a hand-to-hand combat technique for military actions. Its main objective is clear and forceful: to neutralize the attacker completely. Born in a military environment, Krav Maga demands rigorous physical adaptation from its practitioners to its techniques. This means that the learning process is directly linked to the individual's physical condition, requiring a high level of skill.
- KRAV-HAGANA: Self-Defense Adapted for Civilians.
On the other hand, Krav Hagana introduces new practitioners to the world of self-defense for ordinary citizens. It is designed for those who need to face violent threats in their daily lives. The big difference lies in its philosophy: the system adapts to the practitioner. This allows each person to utilize their maximum physical capacity according to their abilities, and most importantly, provides them with the necessary tools to progressively improve their condition.
2 - KRAV-MAGA and the Absence of Sports Competition.
- KRAV-MAGA, conceived as an exclusively combat technique, has not developed a sports competition line. Its focus lies purely on effectiveness for self-defense and actual combat.
-
KRAV-HAGANA: Pioneer in Competition.
In contrast, Krav-Hagana stands out as the only Israeli self-defense system to have established and developed its own competitive line. It has created specific techniques and regulations for sports combat, participating in national and international martial arts events.
3 - The Legacy of KRAV-MAGA
4 - KRAV-MAGA: Teaching Variations
- The creator of KRAV-MAGA is no longer with us. His legacy and the responsibility of maintaining the system now fall to his disciples in Israel.
- KRAV-HAGANA: Direct Access to the Founder
On the other hand, Krav-Hagana still has its creator alive. This situation offers a unique advantage: the ability to learn directly from the original source and resolve any questions about each technique. This is crucial to avoid misinterpretations that could lead to significant errors or incorrect application of the techniques. Furthermore, it ensures that the teaching remains faithful to the initial vision, avoiding the proliferation of personal opinions from instructors that could dilute the essence of the system.
4 - KRAV-MAGA: Teaching Variations
- KRAV-MAGA lacks a formal, detailed teaching program written by its creator. This means there is no standardized guide describing each attack and defense technique step by step. There are also no clearly defined advancement requirements for practitioners to advance to the next category.
This lack of standardization has led to each Krav-Maga school and instructor teaching techniques in different ways, resulting in significant variation among them. - KRAV-HAGANA: A Standardized and Controlled System
In contrast, Krav-Hagana has a comprehensive teaching program written by its creator. This document thoroughly details each technique and specifies the technical requirements that practitioners must meet to advance to each category. Thanks to this rigorous control, the system guarantees that any Krav-Hagana instructor, regardless of their geographical location, will teach the technique in exactly the same way, ensuring global consistency and uniformity.
